Two-Nation Theory and the Idea of Pakistan
The Two-Nation Theory is the foundational idea of the Pakistan Movement: that Muslims and Hindus are two separate nations, not just two religious communities, because of their distinct religions, cultures, traditions, and ways of life — and therefore Muslims deserved a separate homeland.
Key facts:
- The term 'Two-Nation Theory' was first used by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.
- Allama Muhammad Iqbal, in his famous 1930 Allahabad Address (delivered at the annual session of the Muslim League in Allahabad in 1930), proposed the idea of a separate Muslim state in the northwestern regions of India — this is regarded as the intellectual foundation for the demand for Pakistan.
- Allama Iqbal also famously said, 'India is not a country, it is a sub-continent of human beings belonging to different languages and practicing different religions,' emphasizing that India was not naturally a single nation.
- Chaudhry Rehmat Ali, a student at Cambridge, coined the actual word 'Pakistan.' He published a pamphlet titled 'Now or Never' in 1933, and it was in this pamphlet that the word 'Pakistan' was used in print for the first time.
The Lahore Resolution (1940):
- Passed at the 27th annual session of the All India Muslim League, held in Lahore on 23rd March 1940.
- The resolution was presented (moved) by Maulvi Fazal-e-Haq (A.K. Fazlul Haq), Chief Minister of Bengal, even though it is popularly associated with the Muslim League's overall leadership under Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
- The Sindh Muslim League was actually the first provincial branch to pass a resolution demanding a separate state for Muslims, doing so in 1938 — two years before the formal Lahore Resolution of 1940.
Why it matters: LAT frequently distinguishes between who coined the word 'Pakistan' (Rehmat Ali), who gave the intellectual/philosophical basis (Iqbal at Allahabad, 1930), and who formally moved the Lahore Resolution (Fazal-e-Haq) — these are three different people and dates that get mixed up.
